FORTY-EIGHT

1:00 PM, FRIDAY, MAY 3

News Chief Josh called Ryder and Leon to his office. “Have a seat, gentlemen.”

Ryder and Leon sat on chairs on either side of Josh’s desk. Ryder felt warm, like the room’s thermostat had been set too high.

Josh grabbed a color printout of the space plane fact sheet and waved it. “This is the best fact sheet I’ve seen in ages. Excellent work.” He stared at Ryder’s face. “Tell me the truth, Luke. Did Leon help you write this?”

Sweat rolled down Ryder’s back. “He pointed me in the right direction. Bill Little made most of the revisions.”

At first, Leon Turk’s face was deadpan, and then it morphed to show annoyance.

Josh continued, “At first, I had doubts about you, Luke, but this fact sheet and the three recent Astrogram features you penned are proof of your skill and enthusiasm. You’ve earned a spot on our public affairs team. I’m making the X-909 program your permanent beat. The space plane project’s management is pleased with you.”

Ryder glanced at Leon, who now was agitated. Then Ryder gazed at Josh. “Thanks, Mr. Sable.”

“Call me Josh. We’re a family here.”

Ryder wondered what had come over Josh. Bill had phoned Ryder minutes earlier to report he’d talked with his management and had given Ryder a first-rate review. That assessment may have been passed on to Josh.

Leon’s face turned from pale to reddish. Ryder thought the man was as mad as a bull upset by a flapping red cape.

Josh turned to Leon. “Don’t worry, Leon. We have two projects coming up in the next six months I’ll assign to you. You’ll enjoy them.”

Leon stood up and left.

Josh sighed. “He’ll get over it. Keep up the fine work, Luke.”

As Ryder walked down the hall toward his office, he heard Leon talk with someone out of sight. He said he was taking two hours of leave to go to the fitness center to practice hitting a speed punching bag. Ryder thought if Leon vented his anger, it would benefit both of them. Ryder didn’t need any added drama.
